What makes an ordinary piece of furniture…not so ordinary?
An unconventional design + traditional joinery
Flatpack Throwback
Modern knock-down furniture is prevalent in many homes these days, in part thanks to the compact form factor of its disassembled state. However, pieces are rarely broken down upon subsequent changes in location to avoid the hassle of accessing tools or missing hardware.
Seeking to circumvent these issues, I considered the options provided by traditional wood joinery—inspired by a recent tour of the Gamble House—and settled on using a tusk tenon. One pair of wedges inserted into vertical tenons, resulting in enough compressive force to secure shelves, supports and shear panels in place.
The mortise that will take a wedge to put tension along the tenon bar, compressing the horizontal shelf and vertical boards together

In order to highlight its significance, the tenon bar is the only member with a degree of ornamentation—dark staining, shallow grooves and chamfered corners
